Speaking as someone who learned the hard way (3 broken fingers and lost the tip off one) I will always use decent spring compressors. Changing over to coil overs this winter so I will be using them again soon.
I have done this several times, and that $30 spring compressor is WELL worth the money
$30 or so is very cheap insurance. Just think by saving the $$$ doing the job yourself you can buy a spring compressor and you will have it forever and never take the chance of doing a LOT more than $30 damage to you or your car again.
Man why can I never spell teh, (the), right? Anyway, yes, a spring compressor will do wonders. In fact when I was puttign my springs back in using a floor jack and a couple screw driver's for guides I was THINKING about driving out to rent one. The only thing that stopped me was I knew it was a one spring per weekend job, and I didn't feel like renting and returning the tool twice eash. I didn't want to buy ione at the time, and it seemed like a hassle to rent one. But...going off our trials...it'd be a good idea for you to buy one.
Oh, and when you're all doen, you can sell it to a buddy that's doing his springs, and make some of the money back. Then, if you ever need it again, just borrow it.

Now your thinking!!
I have teh same problem with the!
I haven't read all the posts on this thread, but I can tell you, I tried the spring compressor deal and it was a joke with BB springs. I had them straped at a shop. I bolted everything up and cut the straps, as one previous thread mentioned about fingers and toes, I like them just where they are. No point in hurting yourself just for a shortcut.....as I've seen many times.
Mine's been parked all summer. Tranny is dead and I kind of lost interest for now. Been working on my 63 triumph spitfire and my new Nitro RC monster truck. lol

My Grandpa used to take me for a ride in his Triumph Spitfire. It was a cool car but it broke down every time we took it out.
HOLD ON. You're putting a SBC in a Spitfire? That'll be interesting.
It's going to be tight. Gonna have to put a fuel cell in the trunk. Kind of looking at putting a vette IRS in. Looks like some simple narrowing on the half shafts, crossmember, struts, and it will fit well. We'll see.
OMG! I'd better not show this thread to my son since he is rebuilding his Triumph Spitfire and it could give him ideas! I could come home one time to a Corvette with an empty engine bay!!

That would be grounds, immediate grounds, for life removal.
Yup and he knows it Nah he's OK thoroughly engrossed in rebuilding SU carburetors at the moment. And doing a good job too!

A buddy of mine was gonna put a 350 in a his little Samurai hard top. It has a divorced transfer case so the TH350 trans would bolt right up to the driveline no prob. I think he's gotten rid of that plan, but now wants to put an old Beetle body on his Tracker frame. I just don't get him sometimes.
