Not very difficult at all. You will probably have to change the gear and the shaft as they tend to eat each other up.

You will need to pull the dist and disassemble it and setup the gear. There is probably an old thread on it here. Do a search on it and you should find a detailed procedure.

The gear is easy to change. However, that is most likely not your whole problem...

The cross gear uses the inside of the distributor housing as a thrust surface. As this surface wears, the gear digs itself insto the side of the housing. Once it counterbores itself in deep enough to make the gear teeth hit the casting, the cross gear locks up, and the teeth strip out. The teeth on the distrubutor mainshaft also get damaged or destroyed.

You can install a new cross gear, and sometimes this will work for a short while. But what you really have to do is to repair the damage inside the distributor housing (by fabricating a steel insert to replace the wasted area) and replace the mainshaft along with the crossgear.

Contact me if you need assistance with that.

Thanks Lars, I did replace the thrust button and gear and cable and it worked fine for about 3 days then went dead,so i was thinking it was the gear in the dist. I'll have to pull out the dist and look inside.
