the mark VIII and sealing the radiator perimeter helped alot but with continued beating on it and coming off the highway the water would go to 190-200 and soon the oil would approach 250. not that that is so bad but at that point the ac just doesnt cut it and the car becomes non responsive. so i fabricated brackets and ran AN10 fittings and hoses to a B&M super cooler on a 175 thermostat. the fan is mounted where the spare used to be and blows down.it gets power from a relay off the thermostat and conveniently goes to my remote battery access thing.(another post) At 85mph on a 1 1/2 hour trip in 95 degree ambient temp with the ac blasting the water temp never went over 170 and the oil appears to be at about the same. for sure as winter comes and the temp goes to the high 70's ill go to a 180 thermostat. the car is snappier than its ever been and the ac is so cold that you must turn it down. SUCCESS!!!
Ok so I see how you mounted a radiator and fan in the spare tire area... But I don't follow what your doing.
Are you tied into the normal cooling system and all you've done is add another radiator to it?
Or since the second picture appears to have cooling tubes tied into the oil filter area, are you running oil through this other radiator and colling the oil directly?
Please explain what your doing here... I'm kinda lost, but it sounds really cool so I'm interested.
simply a oil cooler. the book says you should put the coolers where the air flow is, in the front. however, im an ac cold superfreak and its so darn hot in miami that i just couldn't see running all of the heat that comes off the oil cooler through both the radiator and ac condenser and tranny cooler. yes there is a ton of volume of air to diffuse the heat but it just makes sense that no added heat is better than some.
nice chart . i totally agree that combustion is happier at higher temps than im running. the bottom line is that when its colder the car feels better, responds quicker, cools the cabin fantastically and runs .2 seconds faster in 1/4 at the track. i also change oil every1000miles or so.
Where did you get teh adapter that fits above the oil filter? I was thinking of doing something just liek this. I hadn't thought of using the stat like you did, but I like the idea. I just need the oil filter adapter. Thanks.
the sandwich adapter under the oil filter is moroso. jegs for 70 bucks. the b&m supercooler is about 195.00. the 1/2" pipe thread to #10 AN fittings are 5 each. the angled AN fittings 90 and 120 on the filter and 30 and 45 at the cooler are about 20 each and the hose was 3 bucks a foot x14 feet. not an inexpensive project but priceless as my ac works so good that i must turn it down on a 95 degree day
isn't blue ac delco? i see the guy changes his oil 1k or so. i have an uncle never changed oil, only filter.the last car i saw of his had over 140k on it.Is changing oil a marketing strategy?? I always changed mine at 5k as it's easy to keep up with 5,10,15 etc. Nice set up on your car and sorry for distracting the thread
ac delco filter. i usually run the truck filters that hold an additional 1/2 qt. but the additonal thickness of the sandwich adapter wouldn't allow it as i have a moroso 8qt pan that kicks out on the bottom. by the way, this system added THREE extra quarts to the system. 8 in the pan 1 in the filter and 3 in the cooler. its now a case per oil change.

Heh some Porsches use 13 quarts. I knew there would be an increase but I thought mroe than that.
Also using a min. of 1/2" steel tubing to the remote cooler is more economical, more long lasting and more space saving than flex lines. The tubing itself transfers heat. Flex lines need only be used from the adapter to the tubes on the frame.
rastadr's cooler is the most efficient being a plate design and a great installation. Remember approx 60% of the sbc are cooled by the oil and only 40% by the coolant. Smart move on his part. Heat in the back should not be any problem. All long limosines add additional a/c condensers under the body. Another added plus is that rastadr has more oil capacity now which is always good.
A case per change huh... does this system and the fact that you have so much oil running thorugh the system allow you to change the oil less fequently? Maybe by changing the Oil filter twice and on the third oil filter change to also change the oil?
im kindof old school. ive always thought of oil as the lifeblood of the engine and the cleaner it is the better. ive been beating the snot out of smallblocks for 30 something years. i hang out in 2nd gear at 6000 or more for long distances cause i like it. i pull up to ricers on the highway and drop it into 3rd at 6500 and just sit next to them . really freaks em out. especially with the sidepipes in their ears. ive never blown and engine. thats why i will keep doing frequent oil changes.

Oh ya AC Delco filters are blue... I was thinking of my motorcycle's filter which is black. Deng, I haven't changed my oil in awhile that means... Better do that soon.
