I got my compressor in last night and was wanting to know if I should flush the system before doing the VIR. I didn't hook up the compressor yet but instead left some plastic sacks on the hose fittings so hopefully nothing gets in there.. Also will I have to remove the compressor to get to my control arm bushings? I figure I would but just wondering incase someone has a magical solution that would make me very happy..
I would flush the evaporator, the condenser, the compressor hose (unattached to the compressor), and the steel line from the VIR to the condenser. This is very important, especially if the original compressor went out as it could leave metal particles in the system which could damage your new compressor. I'd also install a new VIR if the compressor was torn up, and if not, and your pressures were okay before this job, just the dissicant bag in the VIR. As for your control arm bushings, you do not have to remove the compressor to get to them on a '75 which I see is the year of your Vette. Good luck!

Alright, Thanks a whole lot.. I'm about to do that.. When you flush the system do you just hook a vaccum pump to it and run the flush fluid through it? I'm sorry I'm pretty new when it comes to A/C.. I can put parts and stuff in but setting it up is another story all together and all the books i've bought for my vette they always say to take it somewhere. If you could show me a site that would be great and I can read up on it. I'm getting a vaccum pump loaned to me today by an auto parts store.
You don't want to use a vacuum pump while flushing the system. You really need compressed air to force the solution (buy at most auto parts stores) thru the system. There is special equipment for this. If I were you I would go to a book store and get a book on a/c and this will tell you how to proceed. As for a web site, try: http://www.autoacforum.com/categories.cfm?catid=2
Alright guys I'm up the creek right now. I had bought a reman VIR for my 1975 corvette and the section for the main fitting is facing the wrong direction. I know that someone hasn't screwed with it because this is the original VIR on the car stamped with the GM logos and everything. The ones on ebay, advanceautoparts, and oriley's auto are all the same config and apparently don't fit mine.. I attempted to move the top of the head to the right position but whoever remanufactured the damn thing put old bolts in it and they were all pre-stripped just for me.. So what should I do?? I got my system open and I'm attempting to maybe find a bag for the old one but I dunno..

You need to reposition the top portion as you are trying to do. If the screw heads are stripped, drill the heads off and replace them with new screws. Not a big deal. These VIRs fit many different applications and I think they position them to fit the most common usage
