Default L36 intake

I'm on my 5th set of intake gaskets. using felpro and cortec gaskets... vacuum gauge indicates leak at idle, runs good at 1200 rpm on up.. a check for leeks on the top side and found nothing... a compression test shows 180 on all cylinders.... i'm thinking the leak is on bottom side of the intake, but the gaskets i take out look like they are sealed.... is there a way to check the lower side?

1000 miles on fresh engine, standard trans and brake, stock intake, new holly 4175, 8 deg timing 34 total, comp cam and lifters....

How do the plugs look? What is the idle vacuum?

Unhook the PCV valve and use a manometer to see if there is still vacuum in the crankcase.

The L36 intake has a trough in front of part of the carb mounting pad to which exhaust heat is routed to the bottom of the carb to quickly warm an engine.

If you don't have the period correct q-jet, a part of this trough is exposed and the carb will pull outside air from this opening. Check for a leak just below the carb on the driver's side up by the front corner.

If that's not it, tell us what your vacuum needle is doing,..is it drifting?
