You appear to have the valve covers from an '81. The air cleaner lid may have been chrome in '81 also so it may be from the same donor. The brake reservior is aftermarket of course (I'm sure you knew that). Other than that, the engine compartment looks brand new.

Quite a find!

He told me he has never had the valve covers off it. I have no reason what-so-ever to doubt him, but I will ask again. He likes to get little pieces chromed like that. As far as I understood from him, those are all OEM parts that he had chromed. He had the PCV tube and the door strikers chromed also. Regardless of what are on it now, he has all the original ones that came off it. I am going to collect it all this weekend.

My 81 came stock with a chrome air cleaner lid. Valve covers do look

Sorry Rick. I didn't even consider the two items would have been chromed; just assumed that the lid may have come with the '81 valve covers. Now that I checked with Zip's website the black finned valve covers appear to have been an option from 78-82, the plain aluminum finned valve covers appear to have ended with 77; I didn't know that either. I had the impression the black finned aluminum covers were 81-only. I learned something new.

Just wanted you to know I wasn't intending to knock the C3 on whether it was all-orig or not. You have one very nice looking '78 there. Enjoy it!

Hey man, thanks, and no sweat! I wasn't getting pissy, just saying that I believe everything he has told me about the car.

Thanks a lot for the compliments and the help of how to figure it out!

I just found a dealer brochure for it, it shows that if you get the L-82, you get 3.55s with the auto trans and 3.70s with the 4-speed.

That’s a really clean car. Looks great. It seems to have the air pump taken of so be sure to get that. The loops that hold the hood cable across the top of the distributor shield are missing (as is mine too) and the pads on top of the hood springs are gone. I met a guy at a show here that shows his 79 at NCRS who pointed out the pads on top of the springs to me. I only have one and I never noticed it. Also I don’t see any bumpers along the top of the fenders where the hood sits. I have 2 on each side. I don’t know if they all have them or not. I hope this information helps you. You have a really special car there. Enjoy it.

Hi Rick,
I also have a red on red 78. Red leather when I bought the car 3+ years ago from the original owner it had 21K miles on it. It now has 28K. My car when I bought it had the original Goodyears on so I took them off and stored them. Still has original lacquer, original dated exhaust. Also painted t-tops but the prvious owner bought the blue glass tops which is what I normally keep on it. I still have the GM boxes those came in. Mine is a L48 auto with 3:08 rear, air cond, power windows, locks, AM-FM-CB, sport mirrors, rear defrost, aluminum wheels, front and rear Indy spoilers. Could you PM me with what you paid for yours? I am curious as what they are worth in this type of condition.
Thanks

Hey glassToys, thanks a lot! I do have the smog pump and everything that goes with it. When he got the car, he made it just like the real pace car exhaust wise. He kept everything though.

I did not know about the cable loops, or the pads on the hood springs. I found one loop for the hood cable down the cable. I reinstalled that one and ordered another. I also ordered the spring pads.

The hood bumpers I did know about. He has the originals and a set of aftermarket ones with 2-sided tape in the box of stuff that came with it.

Thanks again!

Red on Red shows great!!!Excellent Vette, just beautiful.I wish GM would have made the 82 CE in Red.The biggest reason I got a CE was for the rear hatch now if only red on red............

That car is useless!! Nothing to work on. Let me put the wheels back on my 79 & we can do an even swap. You get a year newer car and something to do in your spare time.

BWT Welcome to the darkside!

This should warrant a grand C3/C2 only discount coupon for great Moroso products!

Nice looking C3 Rick I was wondering why your employee sold the car? BTW, I know of three 78s with that color combo.

Default Build Sheet

Rick-

Beautiful car! I found a build sheet for my '79 between the heat shield and rear end. It was a little dirty but if your car has one there, it would be perfect.

I just got a 1978 yesterday. I am wondering how many are just like mine. I found production numbers and stuff, but I was wondering if there is anyway to put them together. Like I know there were 40,274 base coupes made, 2,074 were red, and 4,067 had red leather interiors. I am looking for a way to figure out how many were red, with a red leather interior. And also the other options.

Is there any way to figure that stuff out or am I out of luck? Also, where are the rpo codes in it?

It is a 1978. It has 13,514 miles on it. All original. I got it from the original owner who has worked with me for the last 25 years. I am the second person to ever drive it! It has never seen rain, and never even been wet. The guy I got it from has never washed it! It has only been floored three times! All of them when it was fairly new, and it was at the track. It went a 14.71 at 90 something mph. He has the slip, he just needs to dig it out. It is red on red with red t-tops. It has the L-82 engine. It has the radio with no options. Sport mirrors. Power windows and locks. rear window defogger. A/C. Auto trans. Tilt/telescope wheel. Power antenna. Dual rear speakers. Aluminum wheels. Convenience Group. I am not sure if it has the gear option. Howard, the guy I got it from, says he thinks they are 3.55.

Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Rick

Not the best pic, I'll post more when I get them!

Very nice ride!
I have also tried to find numbers defining the different color combinations for this year, to no avail. I dont beleive the red on red, 53K original with the options you mentioned were incredibly "rare", as I have almost the same car, but with the fully loaded options including the 8 track w/ cb radio. What does make them rare, is the care yours sounds like it recieved, congrats!!
Yes, I put in the 80 seats (power), but kept the originals in storage.
