Mark,
You're killing me!
I agree with your position and respect it. IRS is "part" of what makes a Vette a Vette, or could it be a Jaguar???? Or others with the same inherent weaknesses.
When they built my car I assure you not one engineer on the project would have dreamed of what lay in store for it 38 years later. And yes I educated myself thoroughly on the Tom's components before arriving at my decision. I think it is a very well designed and thought-out setup and would recommend it for 99% of Vette owners looking for strength and durability. I just happen to be one of those who when they get a vision of what they want, they go get it without regard for the worriers of the world.
You and I have a mutual friend who has an IRS setup probably superior in strength to any commercially available. Ask him how one of his halfshaft u-joints is holding up today.
Please forgive my abomination.

I haven't bought it although i have spoke with th fabricator. I want to put the L-88 flares on and then take my measurements. Nick is holding them hostage until I return his carb. He's funny that way. Here is an interesting IRS video for you.WWWEEELLL, it won't take it since it's an mpeg. I will email it to you. If anyone is interested in "A Bad Day" with an IRS video just PM me your email and I will forward it.

REAL men drive cars with 3 pedals...use the clutch one occasionally on the shifts.......figure the one on the left is made to lay flat on the floor and the one in the middle is the "uh oh.....better look out" pedal!!
They also throw caution to the wind and launch IRS cars at about 6000+ rpm and hang on to see where it's going to land!!
It's just part if the excitement of making a Vette do something it wasn't designed to do!!
Now just 'cause your smarter than the rest of us and are going to stick a solid axle in it....well all I can say is.....I wanna go riding!!!!
We can still launch 800+ HP at 6000 rpm and pull gears!!
And yeah....I found one of those solid Spicer monster 1480 halfshaft u-joints last weekend had a bunch of needles pounded out of it. Was going to replace them all this winter as a precaution anyway.....glad I noticed before I headed to the track!! I guess I've been a *little* hard on them!!

Every time I read Jim's "real men drive cars with three pedals" quote I feel a little less manly

You sure that was an IRS? I didn't see any half shafts or strut rods hanging out. Pretty big tires for an IRS too. OTOH there was that charcteristic Corvette IRS squat right before things went terribly wrong...
And Nick if you're reading this, continue doing your part and hold that carb hostage until Patrick comes to his senses.
John, yours is a pure drag car and therefore intervention is not warranted.
It should. You started all this!!! I was hooked the minute you sent the pic. I knew that bad boy would do what I wanted without worry.Giddy-up!
Budman,
I know I can count on your support because there's likely a pair of QA1's in for you.

That was hard brother. I actually don't want to see any of you guys going to the hospital with a half shaft sticking out of your back side. Explain that on to your wife. Loops or no loops, when one of those babies lets loose you better have some plate back there to block it. Someone got to be the voice of reason here. I can't believe I just typed that, I guess I'm getting old.

Glad I could help....is that going to be a 4 link or ladder bar set up??
Thanks Mark no intervention needed for me. I will keep the irs in my 69 when / if I ever get it back on the road.
I have a complete tube frame chassis for a C3. It actually started out as a back half and then was made into a full chassis.
It has a Currie 9" w/4.57 gears and Detroit Locker. This is a 4-link setup. I would be glad to cut off the front part of the chassis and just sell you the back-half.

I knew Jim wouldn't let me down with his famous...or should I say infamous quote .

Ya know, all I wanted to do was rebuild my 427...and then people like you and 427Hotrod whisper in my ear!
So, let's talk. I''ll PM you tomorrow. Gotta go feed the fat boy at Outback right now.

Mark,
I have the flares and I am not holding them hostage for my carb. I told Patrick to try it on his 598 and let me know how it cruises. Besides, I can't give Patrick any **** about running the solid axle. Because Patrick is the stand up guy that he is, I now have the Dana 60 IRS to put in my car. He and Jim tripped across it at Bowling Green first and had he been a lesser mortal, he could have easily snaked it out from under me.
I am actually cheering Patrick on and would probably be copying exactly what he is doing if I hadn't lucked into the "unobtanium" Dana 60 IRS thanks to him and Jim, and I wasn't planning on running in a Drag Week class that I wouldn't qualify for with the solid axle 4-link setup.
If Patrick's 68 was some historically significant, ultra rare, Bloomington Gold Survivor, NCRS 99.999 point yada yada yada, then I could see getting a little bent over his plans. But his car falls into the category that most of ours do, i.e. aint perfect so do what makes you happy. Life is to damn short to be building these cars to make someone else happy so I say do what works for you.
I know one thing for sure, Patrick is no slouch and does absolutely nothing half-assed. His car will be first rate, top notch and kick-*** when he is finished and I can't wait to see that bad boy run at Bowling Green.
Speaking of bad boys running at Bowling Green, you are planning on bringing yours in 07 ... right ....? A license plate from New Hampshire in the "The Chair of Shame" at the "Texas Embassy" just isn't going to cut it next year. We very much expect to see your smiling face pulling up in your Bad-*** car. : )
