There is a wiring loom that decends to the starter motor. It has 2 larger wires with fusable links in series that hook up to the main lug on starter. Then there is a wire for the start signal terminal. Then there is a black wire (appx 14-16 guage) with a larger connector on the end (looks as if it would slip over starter lug), but i'm not sure if the black wire is for ground or attaches to starter lug. Then of course, theres the large battery cable that attaches to starter lug. Can someone look at their configuration and advise me on this black wire? Is it ground wire, or hook to starter lug?
I'm just wiring mine up now and this is how I went at it. Pictures are a work in progress and please excuse all the dust as I'm in the middle of bodywork and paint.
These are the connections at the starter motor. All the wiring is GXL with an 8awg wire for power.
Here is where I installed my grounds (one is for a relay I added to kick the solenoid).
Although a breaker is a good replacement for a fusable link, I prefer to use a fuse, in this case, a sealed MAXI fuse. The smaller loom in this picture shows the grounds for my EFI system and the wiring to the fuel pump and O2 sensor.
It's a cross linked polyethylene coated wire that is resistant to oil and grease and can resist fairly high temperatures (275F). SXL is the standard jacket, GXL has a little thinner jacket and TXL has a very thin jacket. I use GXL because I loom all my wires and don't require the extra insulation. Most (if not all) of the standard hookup wire that you can buy has a PVC jacket which I would not recommend for engine compartments. Usually you have to buy cross linked wire in quantity which can get expensive for a small project. I buy 16awg and 18awg in 500 foot, and 12awg through 8awg in 250 foot reels.
