I don't know that much about a 78, but the turbo 350's I have seen have a cable; I believe I read that the 400 had a switch that activated the downshift.

"78" TH350 has a detent/kick down cable. Gotta have it. I will post a pic tomorrow on how I installed mine. It's easy. I also have a brand new spare cable if you need one (cheap)? Meanwhile look down at you trans on the passenger side where it should go into the trans, what's there now??

I'm not completely sure about this one (I've only ever worked on a TH350) but I'm pretty sure a TH400 has the detent cable as well. The TH400 isn't that much different from a TH350.

On the transmission itself, the kickdown cable should connect in the same area as the dipstick and both tranny cooling lines. More precisely, it is located just below both tranny cooling lines and forward of the dipstick. It should be within about 2-3 inches of these.

Installing a kickdown cable is relatively easy. You would only have to jack the car up enough to work under your car and drop the transmission oil pan (and be prepared for a mess from the tranny fluid). At the front of the transmission you should see the linkage it needs to connect to on the valve body.

The kickdown bracket is the silver one mounted with the manifold bolts on the right.

I will have to disagree with you on the kickdown for a 400. I knew I had read this somewhere. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...ight=turbo+400

He needs to verify which trans he has cause I don't know what was available in 78.

The TH400 is completely different than a TH350. They do share a bellhousing pattern and torque converters, but after that they are completely different. TH400 has an electric kickdown. It has a male spade terminal on the drivers side above the shifter stud. TH350 has a kickdown cable that enters on the passenger side. They have different pans, different output shaft splines. They do use the same modulator, but it is is a different place. They do not share any internals or case. Not the same.

Default Kickdown cable

WELL, WELL, WELL this has got a mess written all over it (haha) I bought the car 15 mo. ago and haven't done anything to it yet as it is in good shape but wanted to put chrome on engine and bought a new carb. and a intake manifold and new distributor and valve covers, was looking at carb. and noticed the brackets for the kick down cable but it is not there, so that is my delema. I don't know what tranny is in it I do know they put a shift kit in it. I will try and get with member that has the kick down cable and buy it from him to put on. And thank's to everyone that responded to my question that is great. Thanks again all.

Dennis,
just slide under the car, if your pan is relitively square, it's a 400. If it has an angle shape on one corner, it's a 350. More than likely it's a 350. Let me know the shape of your pan. We'll get ya going.
