how do i tell if i need to change sock? is it a pain?
The sock is not a filter that has regular service intervals. They rarely cause problems but when they do, they can shut you down. The problem with the C3's is that they're old and if the original sock is still in place, it too is old. But as Bob says, see how you make out with the carb filter. To change the sock, you have to drop the tank, so yes, it is a pain.

The only filter on your car should be an in-carb filter. You should not have any filter prior to the carb or under the car - if there is, remove it. Replace the in-carb filter with a new NAPA part number 23052.

If it's a Holley without the in-carb filters in the bowls, you need to retain the in-line filter between the pump and the carb. I'd suggest ditching the glass filter with the rubber lines and using a good filter with screw-on inverted flare or AN connections and running hard line between the pump and the carb.
