Default '82 Computer Codes-List

I have searched three manuals and the forum with little or no luck, not any mention of a list of codes and how to get the codes off computer. I understand it is an easy procedure, but what the heck do you do?

Thanks!

Terry, you can get a book at Advance Auto Parts on "code reading". And yes, it is quite easy to pull codes on your vehicle and can actually be done with a paper clip, or you can buy a scanner for around $30 or so. There was an excellent article in "Vette Fever" quite a few years ago if you happened to have gotten that mag and kept the issues for repair help. I've kept all mine but have never taken the time to index them.

You guys rock! I have about every manual from Advance auto and Corvette central but not a code book. I'll get one after church!

Thanks!!!!

Good link too. There seems to be so much junk and "selling of junk" on the net that it clouds good info during a search.

IMO, I've found that the 82 Corvette shop manual from GM is the best. All the other manuals leave a lot out. If your manual doesn't have all the codes and diagnostic charts, you need a different manual.

If you have an old laptop computer with a serial port, conneting with Winaldt and checking what the computer thinks is really nice to have when trouble shooting the 82.

And making a cable was pretty easy, if you have even a little soldering skills. 82's don't need R3 and R4.

And if you have problems this thread might help:

Great stuff! Thanks fellow 82'r. I have ordered a GM shop manual too. The aftermarket manuals try to save a buck and combine too many years and options on Vettes, therefore they do leave alot of repairs to the imagination. Ya don't even get a good view of window motor bushing repair with the non-GM books

I did grab a cheking unit from Advanced Auto, $25. Plugged it in, the only thing it did was make the hood damper open and close , go figure. Im going for the PC stuff.

Thanks all!

I'd also recomend the Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM). It has the exploded views of assembly you won't find in any other repair manuals.

Don't see it mentioned but here is how to retrieve the codes:

Remove the ashtray...see the multiprong plug? Two ports closest to the driverside are the ones you need. Get a stiff wire and bend it into a "U" shape. Jump A and B and with ignition on (watch the engine light)and engine off it should flash a 12 (one flash short pause and then two flashes followed by long pause then 12 again) After it flashes 12 three times in should flash any codes stored in the computer. Once it flashes all the trouble codes it will flash 12 again to tell you its finished.

Thanks Jim, I did get an assembly manual too. Took forever to find the dang plug. The GM shop manual also covers the codes and has a supplimental section on '81 and '82. A must have to DIY.

Im going to take the Advance Auto unit back, $25 is $25. All the unit does is plug in, jump A to B, and you still have to rely on the engine light for pulses.

Thanks for help, what fun to learn all this new stuff
