Default Battery Cables

I need to replace the positive cable that runs from the battery to the starter. How long of a cable do I need? How hard is this to replace?

Buy a cable made for your car so the length will be correct. There are lots of sources. Also, if you can get the car on a lift, it would be a whole easier. Try here: http://www.lectriclimited.com/corvet...log-pdf/71.pdf

It's just hard to see paying $73 for a 2 ga. cable.

Fubba, Is this cable the reason your car wouldn't start?

Hi

Might be a bit difficult to replace it because it's running up at the trunny tunnel and held with P-clips. With the tranny in place, a bit tight to get to, specially if the P-clips are bent and the bolt/nuts hidden.

What can go wrong with this cable ? Normally only the ends corroded, hence some good cleaning should do.

I've got a few more things to check before I do this, but I'm thinking this may be the cause.

Be sure to check the neg. cable where it bolts to the frame under the bat. My cable was real bad there.

First off, I would NOT buy a battery cable for the Vette. What I would suggest is going to the nearest welding supply house and buying welding cable. Some good auto parts places even carry it. The welding cable is available in any gage you need, and has much finer strands. This means it's much more flexible than a normal battery cable. That will help tremendously for installing the cable. Removing the driveshaft will also help. I did this with the engine and tranny in with the welding cable. The car was on jack stands, and it wasn't easy, but by no means the hardest thing I have done on the car.

I think I paid $17 for my cable, and that included the two ends. The guy at the store was even nice enough to crimp the ends on for me. I would also take this opportunity to install a real battery cutoff in the battery compartment. It prevents the battery from draining, and it's a small theft deterent.

Were you having any type of electrical problems?

I forget how long it is, but I would buy a cable from a big-truck dealer. Figure out what length you need and go see your local Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Freightliner, International, WesternStar, etc. parts dealer and get 1 in "00". They can get whatever length you need, they have extra heavy insulation and should last a lifetime. That's what i did.

don't forget to take your existing grommets off the existing cable(s) before having the new cable and ends crimped.

That job is for the birds. Mine went bad last year, it had a bad spot about a foot back from the starter that kept it from starting. I went to Advance Auto with my old cable to figure out the length of cable I needed and replaced it that way. It's definitely a PITA with the driveshaft and tranny in the way.

Why can't you just locate the "bad" area and splice in a new section? There are electrical splice connections for doing just that.
