This is what it should look like.

These are the tubes you will need.

The parts are readily available and not terribly expensive. As an example:

Default Carburetor problems

Hey guys. I'm back with another problem. I finally got around to getting a rebuilt quadrajet and all the hot air choke tubes I was missing and I also got a new fuel line. I put everything on today and started the vette. It started nice and idled really smooth..... at first. Once it warmed up a little, it started smoking like crazy! It's black smoke. I know everything is hooked up correct. I also used the picture posted earlier as a little bit of a reference to see where the choke tubes went. I thought maybe a little bit of crud fell down into the manifold when I took the old carb off and maybe it would just burn its way through, so I took it for a drive. It doesnt want to accelerate even when I floor the pedal and after I drive for just a couple minutes, it'll stall out. The warmer it gets, the more smoke comes out. I let it sit all day and I got in it and drove it tonight and it started up fine and drove nice at first but as soon as it started gettin warm, it did the same thing. The only thing I can think of is that I had to use DOT airline to attach the 2 hot air choke tubes to the carb cause that's all I had on hand and maybe they are burning off? I looked at them, but they dont look like they are. I'll get more into it tomorrow when I have some light and see if I can diagnose the problem, but I'm hoping to get some help or suggestions here first. Thanks for the help guys.

If it floods out after it warms up, indication is that you choke is not opening. Is your choke wide open once the engine is warm?

Your old carb, from the pics, was missing a lot of parts, including the entire choke pulloff system and the secondary airvalve rod - it would never have run right like that, and the choke would never have opened. I see in the one photo that you have opened the secondary airvalve - you never want to force that open like that while the engine is running - it will not run right.

Rebuilt carbs are a real mixed bag, and having a "rebuilt" one doesn't mean it's a good one. Good luck with the setup and tuning!

Vaccuum advance? Sorry to sound like an idiot, but what is that and where is it supposed to be hooked up at? Can anyone post some detailed pics of what it's supposed to look like and where all the hoses are suppose to attach? Help please.

Ba Humbug! Get a new Edelbrock Performer 600cfm carb which will match right up to the intake & all will be good. Yes, if you had the original manifold & all the OE doo-dads & add ons...then yes, the Q-jet would be just dandy. However, You gotta mess of a carb on there and an edelbrock performer intake.....get a new carb.

Just sayin'

Merry Christmas BTW

Vacuum advance is a load sensing device on the side of the distributer. It looks like two pie pans welded together with a nipple sticking out of it.

Right above the fuel inlet there is a vacuum fitting with two black rubber vacuum caps on it. You can hook it up there. This is manifold vacuum, good for performance.

Or down on the base plate on the drivers side front of the carburetor there is a "ported" vacuum tap. This is for emission controls.

Are these necessary? I drove it today and it has alot of hesitation when I stomp on the gas and it idles pretty rough. Still getting smoke, but when I unhook the hot air tubes in idles alot higher, but doesnt smoke as much. It is also backfiring some when it sits and idles. Thanks for all the help. Any more advice?

You need your vacuum advance before you can ever start tuning the carb. Set your timing to 36 degrees total, hook up your vacuum advance and make sure it's working, and only then start looking at the carb if it's still not running right.
The carb in your photos is a commercially rebuilt carb, and is most likely set up extremely lean with quite a few problems. But you gotta' fix your timing and vacuum advance first.

No, General Motors designed and built many systems that were not needed on these cars.
