Alrighty guys I fired up the 76 yesterday after the 200r4 install And now i can't get the key out of the ignition.I removed the shifter to install the shiftworks detent and after it was put back in I double checked everything and dont see anything out of place or missing.
There is a link that runs from the trans detent to the steering column. When it's in Park, it rotates the lower part of the column to allow it to lock. I'm not sure how it adjusts, but the cable is most likely your problem.
If you no longer are using the cable for lockout remove it a t the steering column bottom and put the lever in the position where the key will come out.

Thanks Guys!!That was the problem. That is why I love this forum!!!
The Corvette transmission shift interlock system (1969 through 1976) operates as follows:
With the automatic trans in PARK or a manual transmission in REVERSE, a cable attached to the trans should push on the lever on the lower end of your steering column. The cable should push the lever to the full UP position.
Securing the lever on the lower end of the steering column in the full UP position will enable you to shut off your engine and turn the ignition lock cylinder all the way to OFF-LOCK (locking your steering wheel) even when your are still moving down the road!
