Good luck. I was originally thinking of a similar combo in a crate motor but my engine is running too well to justify the $$

A friend of mine with a '77 L-82 switched to a Performer. At the same time I went to a Holley Street Dominator. My friends car had more power at the time, but my car showed a larger improvement from the Holley. BTW, our cars were running almost identical iron intakes before. Just my $0.02.
If your friend had an L82 and you had a L48, that explains the difference in improvement. Gdaina measured the L82 intake vs. the performer and they were nearly identical, so there would be little to no inprovement when your friend switched. However, your switch from an L48 manifold to a performer or any similar intake would yield significantly more improvement.

Ttop Tony: As I said, it all depends on your motivation. I would agree, if you're just going to tool around town, the Performer makes some sense. However, IMHO if your just going to tool around town, why bother switching manifolds and a cam? And if you're going to switch cams, aren't you going to need to let the engine breath better? Now we start talking about heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, and exhaust systems. This is why I'd go with the RPM aig-gap. I tend to prepare for what's coming. I don't want to buy one manifold now, only to have to buy another one when I get new cam and heads. That's my reasoning. My opinion, unless I was looking for performance to do something with, I'd keep my money in my pocket. Save it for a rear end job or something. God knows if you can't think of something to do with your money, the car will. :smash:

Just my $0.02, and that's about all it's worth.

You have points there 79Makol82, however I think your missing the most important part of his picture.

Emissions, the rpm air gap has no egr fitting and like he said b4 he has to keep emissions legal.

Alot of people just enjoy messing with there toys and his switch to a aftermarket intake on a l48 is a 20-40 hp increase for him and its cheep, so the hp -vs- $$ is worth the mod.

Point taken. I guess down here in Florida where we don't have emissions testing, we take our ability to change anything we want for granted. I certainly was not trying to belittle him for wanting to make the change. If I lived in a state where I had to maintain the the EGR system, I would probably shell out th $100 for the performer with EGR. Gotta take what you can get.

I took no offense to what you said. I understand what your talking about. The performer is probably not that much better then the stock manifold except its alum. The performer RPM is a step up. Everyones entitled to there opinion here. Thanks for all the info folks.

I believe 79MakoL82 and all the other guys that are telling you to go with the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap are steering you the right way, i am thinking of getting a higher profile hood next year then i will be putting a rpm gap myself.

I agree and was not trying to sound ill about the subject, I was just pointing out to ppl who keep adding to go with the air gap that it is not always a option when being stuck under the thumb of the emissions laws.

If no emission restrictions I would suggest not upgrading anything until you have the funds to add more than an intake.

Since he has a '75 the intake manifolds were the same part, cast iron, for the L48 as for the L82. So I don't see how the L48 would get any more improvement than the L82 for this single swap.....

However, for best results he does need to switch manifolds to go from a spread-bore (Qjet) to a square-bore (Holley Street Avenger) and even with a cowl induction hood there is a limit to manifold height. I know for a fact that with a Performer intake and the Holley Street Avenger, I cannot fit a 14x3 drop base under my hood. I can fit a 10x2 flat base tho.... I'm still exploring the different options for air cleaner bases.
