I am planning on putting in an alum intake for my new Holley Avenger. Can anyone recommend a good dual plane intake. I need something for idle to about 5500 rpm. I have a cowl hood so clearance isn't a problem. Any suggestions are appreciated. Right now I'm thinking of the Weiand Action Plus or the performer edelbrock. Didn't know if there really is any difference.
I'd go with the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap. Even though it's 1500-6,500, how much time do you spend at idle to 1,500 when you're looking for HP? When I'm looking for HP, I'm not under 3,000 RPM's.
Depends on your purpose for the swap. You will lose some HP on the lower end but add it to the higher end. IMHO, when I'm just cruising around town it doesn't matter how much HP I have on the lower end because I don't need it. However, if I'm looking to move out, light 'em up and disappear, I'm over 3,000 RPM's, where I will find the addition of the ponies on the high end a useful tool. GDaina found no difference between the L82 manifold and the Performer manifold. So when I swap, it will be to a RPM or similar manifold to add to the high end performance, otherwise, why bother?
That's my opinion anyway. Others will have theirs.
For your 75 l48, If the engine is mildly built I would go with a edelbrock performer. It is below the performer rpm line, but great for idle to 5500 and does its improvement on the bottom end of the power curve. Anything much more is just moving the power curve further up the rpm range.
I am using the performer w/egr on my engine, I wanted more torque/hp at the middle of the power curve, I doubt I will see 6k rpm usage enough to alter my power curve. I went for the egr version due to emissions requirements.
I used the Performer on my 73 L-48. I did get better low end performance, I don't know if it did anything for the top end. I drive long trips without problems and I can lite them up when I want.
I understand what your saying but like 1976C3 my car rarely sees past 5000rpm and losing low end hp is probably not so good with my wussie engine. Your L82 intake is probably much better then my L48 model.
Pick up a pair of vortec heads and a performer intake for vortec heads. The heads are cheep around $400ish assembled and will really help your engine over all. This combo of heads/intake will ,make you think its a totally different engine.
I would go with the Edelbrock performer rpm air gap. For the money it can't be beaten. You have plenty of hood clearence. The raised runner design cools the intake charge which = extra HP. (always a good thing). 1500rpm to 6500rpm is perfect for street and strip. Just my 2 cents.
From what little bit I have read in a Holley rebuild book, I would say that you are making the correct choice for an intake manifold (dual plane). Why? Because I feel that for my driving habits I rely more on torque than horsepower. I am not at every stop light drag racing the next guy, but you will see me diving my car into corners and hammering the throttle to rocket my car out of the turn as fast as possible. So what am I trying to say...is that in my opinion only...Horsepower sells cars but people drive torque.
So it really comes down to what you enjoy to do, if you love lighting up your tires and drag racing, or taking your car to a super speedway and driving it at it's top speed, then go for a high rise intake, but if you are more of the type of driver like me then a dual plane intake is your best bet.
I have a Holley dual plane that is very similar to the Edlebrook Performer, mine is about 8 years old so follow the recommendations of the other posts on which model to purchase.
Just as a side note, I get all my performance parts from Summit Racing.
The thing to remember here is that he has EMISSIONS inspections and going with these suggested edelbrock rpm & rpm air gap, are a no go for him.
He has to go with something for emissions and his engine is not modified enough to warrent the bigger intakes suggested. You can over intake an engine and when you are going with a mostly stock setup or mild mod's then it is counter productive to plop a big old intake on there that is desgined for more engine than a l48 is.
It looks like most people with stock L48 motors are using the performer intake. They do make a performer air gap but $200 for an intake seems like a lot. I thought seriously about the vortec heads and intake option Jim Pace Parts has a conversion kit with heads, intake, rockers... for $700 not bad. But these are not emmision legal and I'm not sure what the compression ratio would be with 64 cc heads. Probably too much for my motor. I am looking for lots of low end torque so maybe I should stick with the performer since alot of people have already tried it.

Re: Recommendation for an intake (TTop Tony)
I have the RPM Air Gap anf the car runs just fine from idle to 1500 RPM. I switched from
a Performer ( the original low profile one eveyone has ) and I did not notice any difference
in the idle to 1500 RPM range between the two.
There is however no contest as to which one I prefer at higher RPM's.
If your motor is mostly stock I would stick with the Performer.

Re: Recommendation for an intake (MotorHead)
Stick with a Performer. Don't worry about getting an Air Gap of RPM series.
Most likely you have emissions inspections, so you will need to get a manifold that has EGR as well.
A friend of mine with a '77 L-82 switched to a Performer. At the same time I went to a Holley Street Dominator. My friends car had more power at the time, but my car showed a larger improvement from the Holley. BTW, our cars were running almost identical iron intakes before. Just my $0.02.
