Default TH400 Numbers

On the passenger side the metal tag denotes:

401
CK 69 3717

On the driver side stamped on the case above the pan:

(?)9S716613 This number minus the first (?) matches the vehicle's VIN.

Question: What does the first set of numbers represent?

Question: Concerning the stamped numbers what is the sequence of numbers? Is my (?) really a number or is it part of the case.

Trans code, CK sounds right for '69 corvette, I think the 401 is built on the 401st day of the model year, and I think the 3717 is the sequntial number of the trans...I could be a little off on the 401/3717.

The stamped numbers hit the jackpot...this is the original trans for the car. I'm pretty sure the partial VIN is 19SXXXXX. Should be the same as on the engine pad, if original engine.

Not sure what all the numbers mean but,

in the CK, the K is the automatic used with the 350 (S with hydraulic 427, Y with solid 427)

the 69 is the model year 1969

the 371 is the Julian date code and is January 6, 1969 (the 371st day from 01/01/68)

and agree with halfmoontrail, the ? in the VIN stamp should be a 1 and this is also what would have been stamped on your engine block if it were original.

EDIT: I just saw the rest of halfmoontrails post in the quote and maybe the 401 is the Julian date as he says. In that case, you would count 401 days from Jan 01, 1968 to get the asssembly date of the tranny, or what is that Feb 05, 1968? This also fits better with your 16613 vin as your car was built in mid Feb 1969.

VIN's for a 69 started at 194379S700001 thru 194379S738762.

So shouldn't my mystery (?) number be a 7?

The partial stamp was the last 8 characters of the VIN, with a 1 in front for Chevrolet.
