I am in the process of upgrading the evaporative system on my 72. The canister has 4 nozzles, 3 on the top and one at the bottom. The top three are marked, fuel tank, carb, PCV. Can one of the vacccum connectors be plugged, namely the PCV? I don't have PCV on my engine, rather I have two filter breather elements. Second question, What is the function of the connector on the bottom of the canister?

Thanks
Yes. I plugged all mine except for the fuel tank. It keeps the smell of gas down in the garage.
The carb nozzle is there to supply vacuum to open a valve on the canister allowing the vapors to be drawn into the engine. The PVC connection is the vapor passage to the engine.
The PCV system will keep oil vapors out of the engine compartment better than the filters you have. If it were me, I would put the PCV valve back in and run it to the inlet tube on your Q-Jet (center-front of carb at the base) even if you don't route the evap cannister tube with it.
