Default Timing coming in to soon..

Hey guys,

I just got finished changing my oil pump, oil pan, timing chain, timing cover water pump, yada yada yada.....

I thought I would check my timing to see where it was. The thing that I found strange is that when I rev the car while watching the 36 degree mark on the balancer I end up reaching 36 degrees at about 1700 rpm. It doesnt' go any higher than this. It only gets to 36, but it gets there so quickly.

From what I have read on the forum, it shouldn't be reaching full advance until around 2600 or so.

Does this matter, or do I not need to worry about it.....???...

What do I need to do to fix it...???...

Thanks in advance....

Will

Try making one of the springs stiffer and see how fast it comes in then.

Do you have an HEI disti.? I have this same exact problem with mine coming in too early - 1800 RPM. I used the stiffest springs that i could find (gold ones) and it did not make a difference. Lars recommended to me to try one gold and one black spring. I have yet to try this though. If you find a solution please post it.

I have a Mallory HEI distributor. Not exactly sure what model but I'll find out later. I will try the one black and one gold and let you know.

What are the performance ramifications of the advance coming in to early?

Thanks again,

Will

Got it figured. Put in two silver springs out of a mr gasket hei curve kit I had. I hit total timing of about 38* at about 2800-2900. Somewhere in that ball park. I might drop it back a little to 36* total but I'll look at that tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies guys...

Bring the timing in as fast as the engine will take it without detonaton. Nothing wrong with 36 total at 1700 if you get no detonation. But tuning is a process of trying things out: see how the car feels with the slower curve - I'm going to guess that it will feel more responsive and snappy with the fast curve in it.

Thanks Lars,

Sorry so long to reply. I have to say that I have noticed a decrease in performance with the slower curve. I don't think I have had any problems with detonation with the faster curve.

I can't be sure though, as the car is quite loud and I'm not sure I could hear detonation if it were there. I have been running the car like this for probably 6 months now, since i installed the Mallory and don't seem ot have had any troubles.

If it is okay to have the faster curve, then I think I'll be going back to it.

Thanks,

Will
