Default Remove BB from 1968 Vette

I am in the process of removing the 427 from my 1968 Corvette to go through the engine. I already have the heads and exhaust manifolds off. looking for the best way to pull with or with-out the transmision? I would also like to replace the seals on the tranny so it will also have to come out, Also should it all go in as one assembly? Any input will be appreciated!

In and out as an assembly is easier than seperate. the bell housing bolts are tough to get to, and the tranny is a lot easier to do off the car than on.

Pull it all out together it is much easier to do. Also be sure to drain the tranny otherwise the gear oil will run out as you have to tilt it back when it comes out and that stuff make a real mess.

A Big Block with the transmission still on it is a BIG lift. When I took mine out I did the engine first. The transmission seals can be replaced with the transmission still under the car. I would rig a fixture to hold it in place while the engine is out. It should be very easy to split the engine/transmission with the heads off.

I used a heavy duty hydraulic ram hoist, engine and tranny together with heads/manifold on. A bit strange moving that much weight around the garage. If you have not done it,take out the radiator and loosen the support or take it out. I also made a engine cradle from 2x6's so it sat with pan on, made it simple to get to motor shop..

THANKS for all your comments. Because of the weight, I think I will remove the M-21 transmission first then install the entire unit as an assembly. Wish me luck!
