Were you able to replace the amp meter without taking the console dash plate off? (the metal piece that the console gauges are in)

Default Ammeter Thanks

Thanks to all who assisted. My ammeter is now functioning.

Larry,
Just a note:
1. Neither wire is a ground.
2. The black wire is/or should read battery voltage.
3. The Black/white tracer is also hot. It runs to the fuse block into the engine compartment. On the inside there is a fuseable link that jumpers the Black/white tracer to red hot inside the engine compartment on the back of the fuse box. That orange wire on mine was toasty. Pain to get to with the brake booster in the way.
4. I could get to my ammeter and connector with the radio and passenger console side panel removed. I used alligator clips and fabricated jumper wires to test ammeter. Connect 1.5 AA or A battery to ammeter. Ammeter full scale deflection. Reverse battery. Ammeter full scale deflection oppositite direction.
5. To remove ammeter you would have to pull guage console.
6. I have an extra ammeter if you need one.

Good luck
