Default 68 heater core

What Is The Trick To Removing The Heater Box From The Inside To Replace The Core. I Removed All Visible Screws & Nuts From Both Sides,it Seems Like It Wants To Come Out But Something Is Holding It At The Top Left, looking At It From The Inside Of Car.

did you remove the heater hoses and clamps? If you just cut the hoses they wont come through the hole the clamps and hoses are too big. Also there should be a foam seal around the tubes of the core itself where in goes from the engine compartment to the heater box, this can prevent the removal of the box.

It's been a while since I did this but I believe there is a stud that comes off the box in the upper left. It will have a nut on the firewall that (I think) sandwiches the whole deal together. I remember I had the same experience.

It might be the thick rubber seal around the spouts.

Make sure the vent tube for the drivers side floor is unscrewd theres a bolt lower left that I didnt see ...Mostly its just the black caulking and the tubes are bent at an angle going through the firewall ....One more is the vent tube upper right it has a wingnut to unscrew to remove..
I just pulled mine out yesterday ....I did bend the lower right stud a bit when I pulled the box out....

It pulls out from the inside of the car, not the outside...but it appears you are past the point of needing this advice

The tube, itself, may be bent back towards the right (from the inside of the car) to cause it to hang up a little bit. If you have the screws out from both sides, give it an easy tug and it should come out. Just went through this three weeks ago Make sure the hoses in the engine compartment are all the way off.

Default Extra bolts

When I did mine (73 w/o A/C) there were two additional nuts on the engine side of the firewall AFTER I removed the 6 nuts on the blower box and pulled the box away.

I don't know if they're original, or a previous owner slapped them on there to align the ducts before sealing the blower box back on, but they were there when I took it off.

I worte up a paper on doing a C3 heater core (without A/C). If anyone wants it drop me a line and I can e-mail you the pdf.

Good luck,

Jim

P.S. Get a bunch of lightbulbs for behind the guages while you have the center console open.... how silly would you feel if next month one of those suckers burned out?

Well, everything went smooth for me...almost...then Murphy lent a hand!

Got everything out and cleaned-up with no problems. Man was it dirty!!! I think the previous owner had his pet gerbils in there running the fan!!!

Then when I was re-installing the bolt on the bottom inner decided to snap off as I was tightening it down! However, it is in tight enough for now. I'll have to remove it again when I replace everything in the dash, like wiring, and I'll fix it then.

I'll post a few shots on my blogger.

Default Just out of curiosity

Hey BW,

Just out of curiosity, were there 2 extra nuts on the studs directly against the firewall when you pulled the blower box? Or was that peculiar to my very peculiar engine compartment. ?
