The plate that came out of my 80 after a rear end rebuild is sitting in a pile of parts that didn't go back on my car during various projects. If it is the same plate, then the answer is no.

If it is the plate like is on my '81, then it is a heat shield for the diff and the spring due to the tailpipes and mufflers being back here. However, my '81 has the composite spring rather than metal so that may make a difference. I know the VB&P spring replacement comes with its own heat shield and they insist that must be in place for the composite spring. I'll be putting mine back on even with the VB&P shield being there.
