Can anyone confirm that I'm doing this right?

3970010, J-10-3

010 High tin block

J - October

10 - 10th

I cannot help you much on the date code, but I don't believe the 010 at the end of the block casting number is the high nickel block. Most 350's in the mid-70's had the 3970010. I believe the way to tell if it is a high nickel block is that there will be a 010 on the front of the block, behind the timing cover.

I wondered about this. Seems like every block that I looked at had the 0010 number on it. I couldn't see why every one that I saw was the rare and desirable high nickel, high tin version.

Not sure of this but I seem to recall that the earlier 0010 blocks that were the high tin blocks had a wide but narrow number pad. (010) the later 0010 blocks had a shorter but deeper number pad. It is not something you might spot looking from one block to another but once you are aware of the difference it is readily noticeable.
