Just bought new door panels, seat covers with installed foam, 4", and many other items. I also purchased my Carpet from Ecklers and am a little dissapointed to say the least! Found out that almost every piece had to be trimmed or cut to fit. And like me, if your getting someone else to install it, your talking big bucks for labor charges. According to my interior guy, the quality is definately under stock quality. It's a little too late for me, but maybe your suggestions could save others the cheap substitute that Ecklers offered me. Wished I would have spent more time on the forum before jumping! :(
Actually there aren't many options. Eckler's sells ACC carpet, which is the same stuff that most of the vendors sell. From what I've seen here on the forum, the quality of the ACC carpet is a hit or miss. Miss in your case and mine. My carpet was clearly molded for a different car, so no matter what I tried, I couldn't make it look right.
I hate to say it, but ecklers is the worse place to go to for carpet. You paid $200 for complete carpet? Willcox is $60 cheaper, and quality is probably identical if not better. Door panels, you paid $200 a peice for the trimless panels. Wilcox has them for $135 a peice. I think I will stop there, but what you paid for parts alone, you could have had your laybor and parts by going to this place, and probably spent about the same amount of $$. THe address is: http://www.yankeelady.com/willcox/wi...#door%20panels
and they told me they could get almost any interior part for less(seat covers too).
Hate to say it, but it seems all molded carpet is pretty shoddy lately, which is why Im going to sew my own according to Alwyn's pictures, at least this way I know who to blame
I bought my new carpet from Romeo two years ago. Excellent fit and trim but the basic carpet was junk. Just a little better than four other samples I got from the major corvette carpet people. Romeo said that none of the mills made carpet comparable to the original JP Stevens stuff. Thats for sure.
Re: Is Your Replacement Carpet Cheap? (OldSlowVette)
I got the same stuff from Corvette America. Carpet so thin you can read the newspaper though it. And what is up with these reproduction "velcro" fasteners on the door panels and pillar post moldings?! They most definately DO NOT work with the original pieces attached to the pillars and doors. I think I may have been better off with a sheet of dark saddle vinyl, some adhesive, and a heat gun, re-doing my OEM pieces. I guess I just wanted those parts to fly off the pretty color pages of the catalog and fit perfectly, live and learn. Now I know why GM Restoration parts are so expensive-THEY FIT!
To be fair though, it does look pretty good now that it's all installed.

From what I understand, GM Restoration Parts are just plain ole repros like the others we see in the market--they may be good or bad. They are not made by GM; GM just sells a licence to use this name, or something like that. I see only disadvantages: the vendor has to pay GM to use the GM Restoration Parts name, and part of this cost is repassed to the customer, and part may be compensated by lowering the quality. GM doesn't give a rat's a s s about the quality--they just want their money.
I bought ACC 80/20 loop which is terrible in quality.
Very thin.Seems like they use less nylon to save money.
Backing can be seen in many areas.
Loops mat down under mats and backing seen is even worse.
I was giving NJ74stingray(Frank) a hand putting his new ACC carpet in last week.
He has a '74 so he bought the cut pile.
Still pretty thin but looks better than 80/20 loop in quality but his problem is the passenger side piece was over 2" short at the console at the seat right out of the box.
This was noticed after the drivers side was installed.
Will ACC take his carpet back?
Or give him a new passenger side piece?
Will it match?
Stay tuned to this bat channel boys and girls.
check this link : Completely Re-did my Carpet front to back..Without buying a Precut Piece ( 1 2 ): Just scroll down to that particular topic...I di min myself and bought the carpet from an upholsterer...I then trimmed it ato fit and did all the labor myself ..It is not that difficult....Plus the carpet only cost me 65 bucks or so and it is Mercedes Benz quality carpet..If yas want pics I can show ya
Alwyn - I'm all ears and eyes. Send me what ya got. If yours is a 74 it can't be much different then my 69. I want mine done right and would like to pick my own carpet.
Alwyn's right on. You can get outstanding quality carpet IF you buy from a bulk roll. Then it is a just a matter of shaping and trimming it. The upholstry guy that does work for me uses a steamer to heat and mold carpet over compound curves (like the wheel well humps in the back). Also, a pro can do anything you want, such as heel pads, extra padding, different shades, etc...
