I changed the secondary spring (from the stock silver to the black one) on my Holley Street Avenger yesterday and was wondering 1)what can I expect (performance and gas-mileage wise) and 2) what exactly did I do?
Today I drove it around town and on the interstate and noticed it was ALOT more responsive and it appreared to have more power through the range when I "open her up" to get on the interstate. Am I imagining this? What does the yellow spring do?
These springs allow you to tune when the secondaries come in.
What you want to do is bring in the secondaries as soon as possible without creating a bog. Holley's web-site should have the opening rpm ratings for all of the different colors of springs.
The spring changes how early or late the secondaries open. I don't know which is which off the top of my noggin, but that's what they do. A lighter spring will open earlier and may put you below where the engine wants that extra kick. Just the opposite for a heavier spring- it'll open later.

Use the short white spring in the kit - it's the softest one and will allow the secondaries to open fully.
...good thing you didn't use the black - your secs would never open...
