Default Choke

What are you guys running? Electric or mech? I've got an electric setup on my Speed Demon 650 and I hate it. First off, the choke linkage interferes with the air cleaner base and sometimes hangs up, and on top of that, it never works properly (doesnt help that I dont really know how to set it up right).

Even when the car is cold, I never have problems starting... except when the choke is on, because it wont idle for $hit

My baby always sleeps in a heated garage, and is never really out when its cold anyway. PLUS, when I've been driving for a while, shut it down, then go to start it back up only a few mins later, it has trouble running because the choke kicks in again.

WTF? Can I switch my electric choke back to a mech setup? Anyone else have problems like this? Or is mine just setup incorrectly? This piece of junk makes me want fuel injection even more.....

Thanks

Choke? We don't need no stinking choke!

I had an electric a few years ago on my other motor and hated it for the same reason you are stating. I disconnected it and never have run one since. The Demon, well there is no choice on the choke!

I have a buddy with a '63 Impala who hasn't had a choke for years. Sits all winter so why have it.

Mine is wired open, you have to give it a little gas while it warms up, but not really an issue. I have also considered just running a manual choke cable and mounting it where the wiper override **** would be in the earlier C3s.

Beginning to think I'll do the same... at least until my Megasquirt plan materializes.

Thanks for the replies.

Depends on how it wants to start. I have 4 older cars and trucks. The newest being the 75 Vette, The only thing that I use a choke on is the 69 El Camino. Its hard to start without the choke. My 59 Apache on the avatar, is 13 to1 compression, and starts ok on cold days with out a choke.

Pump or two of the pedal and it fires right up... and it was 30* out today. I ALWAYS have trouble keeping it running the first few mins though, solely because of the choke. It just does not like to idle.

So basically... I'm leaning towards the fact that I dont need it.

If it starts all 4 seasons,no prob....just disable it...my rear carb is electric choked and works great, the front carb is forced full open at the electric choke spring...these are E-brocks....I need a choke up here as she is a non-garaged car and I start it once a week all winter and it fires quicker with the choke...in your case, why bother messin' with a choke..

When a electric ,or any choke for that matter, is set up properly it will make your life easier. That is its purpose. When set up improperly they will give you fits. Really quite easy to set up right but you can get by without if you choose.

Joe, Kevin runs a 750 SD and no choke. He drives the car year round. Give it a few minutes to warm up and good to go.
I'm running a Holley 670 SA with electric choke and it works ok. I just bolted it on though, I haven't really tried to set it up yet.
