You want to look at your total timing, shouldn't be more than 36* at 2500 r's. I also have the pertronix flame thrower and was having trouble with a ping, you will probably need to adjusted your vacuum adv. canistor it was my problem.

Initial does not mean much. What is your total timing. Should be around 34 to 36 degrees

initial timing setting is telling us nothing.

with the vacuum advance unit disconnected and the vaccum hose plugged what is the timing at when it's all in and at what rpm is the timing all in at?

you should be in the range of around 34º-38º total timing with it all in somewhere between 2800-3000rpm. (some people like to bring it in as soon as 2500rpm)

Does it ping as soon as you start driving or only after you have been on the road for 30 minutes or so and the engine is warmed up?

Sounds like the problem I had. It would only ping after I'd been driving
30 minutes or so, and going up a hill it was definitely more noticeable.

In my case the vacuum line from the EGR was hooked up to the wrong
**** on the thermal vacuum switch. If working properly, the EGR cools things down.

Another thing to look at is whether the doors in the horns of your air cleaner are working properly. When you start up, hot air is pumped in through that foil hose on the left side. The doors stay closed initially, but then should open up. The hoses from the horns work off a vaccum, which is controlled by a temp switch.

If you go to autozone.com and type in your vehicle type, you can find diagrams and explanations of these systems.
