Default Help me identify my cam..

When I pulled the cam out of my old motor, I wrote down all the numbers on it...

The front (towards the timing cover) only had C6F on it
The back had following things stamped into the cam:

SBC 1126 KB97

Is there a way to identify the cam based on those stamped in number?

It is SUPPOSED to be COMP CAMS part# 12-908-9 / grind number 300BR-6

You should have checked it before you pulled it. All it takes is a degree wheel and a dial indicator.

Does this mean that there's no way to match the numbers on the cam with the brand and model cam?

Thanks! I do have those specs but I want to know if my cam is REALLY that cam. That's the cam that I asked the builder to use (the original builder of the enigine) and I want to make sure that it is that cam... There has to be some way to cross reference the numbers on the cam with the part number that it's supposed to be?

Do you have a micrometer ? You can measure the lift and that would be a quick and easy indicator, if it matched the specs. Otherwise you need the crank and cam in the block with a degree wheel on the crank. When i looked up the grind # it said drag race, billet roller. Those are some pretty strong specs too.

I don't want to measure etc.. I just want to know if there's a way to match the numbers on the cam to a certain grind number/part number...
Even if the specs turn out to be the same as the cam that I think it is, doesn't automatically mean that it is that cam. It could be a cheap knockoff with the same specs.. There has to be a way to know what cam it is just with the numbers on it..

I just found out what cam it is... Someone at another forum found the cam:

http://www.dougherbert.com/8620bille...44c7b9a6a21e8e

This means that I didn't get the cam that I paid for even though the specs are very similar...

I paid for a $350 comp cams cam and got a $189 Doug Herbert cam.. Not that it's a inferior product etc.. but I expect to get what I pay for...

The specs on the cam that I was SUPPOSED to get were:

264/270 degrees .050 duration and .630 lift (.672 with 1.6 Rocker arms) and 106 degrees lobe center

the cam that I got instead had:
261/270 degrees .050 duration and .625 lift and 106 lobe center..

The guy at the other forum actually used Doug Herbert cams himself.. He said that Doug Herbert cams are actually at least as good or better than comp cams but don't do that much advertising and that's why their prices are cheaper..

I am so old, I actually once bought a cam from Chet, Dougs dad. He answered his own phone and took your order.

They have been in business a lot longer than Comp Cams and other large cam manufactorers.. Their cams are definetely top notch!!

If my 406 rebuild will be a success, I'll probably do my own engine building and will have the machine shop just do the machine work but no assembly..

Even if you thought you had a Comp Cams piece and got a Herbert, you got a good cam. All though you should have gotten what you paid for, The Herbert cams are the best you can get. Check into there background. If you have a problem with the parts you get from them, they stand behind them very well. I buy most of the parts I get from them, and have for 15 years. Top Notch
