Default Decoding metering rods.

I'm working on the old AFB carb that's on my ***** 318. It was running good with some issues. I had it rebuilt and now the issues are solved but it runs worse. I guess one jet wasn't even supplying fuel. Now that it's working again, it seems to run very rich. I smell fuel at anything over 1500 RPMs and it'll start clicking / knocking going up a hill.

I pulled the metering rods out, and they are already kind of thick. They are thicker than any of the other rods I have in some of the Edelbrock carbs I have of the similar series.

I was wondering how to decode the number on the rod, and how to determine which rods to get.

It's a 1997 ***** 318, converted to carb, with an AFB. The rods have this number: 16-388.

I was told I need rods that are a few thousandths thicker or leaner, but I need to know how to decode these rods first as the number doesn't match anything in the books at the parts stores.

Yep, sorry, meant for this to be in general. My bad.

Heh heh...I do. Thanks for the helps guys. I'm wondering if there really is a rod thicker. With one jet not even working It was running great. Now with both it's too rich. I guess anyway.

Would float level have anything to do with this? Are the above symptoms of a rich condition? It does start good.

Okay, I have been given some other advice but it just confused me even more.

I was told it may be lean. I don't understand that considering I smell gas when it's stumbling up a hill.

I was told to back the timing off a few degrees, and if it still has trouble it may be lean.

I have some richer rods I can try from a different carb, but does this really sound like a lean condition?

Yep. George said we could speak of other makes and models so long as it's a viable problem. He also said if it's not solved within a few pages it gets moved to that other autos section.

You really like to "test the waters" don't you DB?? We have a new mod AND an ADMINISTRATOR hanging around the forum patrolling for posts like this and you post this nonsense. Why didn't you just LEAVE OUT the about your Dodge and just ask about the AFB? You have a choice...delete any reference about the Dodge or I report this to the mods.
