Hey everybody, up against the wall again. Im having some starting problems and was wondering if i could get some new thoughts or insight into how i can fix it. Im having starter problems, in the sense that the car starts fine 90% of the time. The other 10 , when the key is turned the cellanoid clicks as if a weak battery and then starts. Im nickling and diming to try and fix the thing. I've bought a new battery, starter, cleared the grounds and connections, and replaced the neutral saftey switch. Im thinking the sterring column but dont want to go through all that mess just to find out it was something else. I would appreciate any help with this i could get.
When you say "new starter" do you mean NEW or an Autozone rebuilt? If it is a rebuilt you could well have gotten one with toasty windings which will make the starter drag when hot. It can be a real crapshoot getting a rebuilt starter with good windings which then only perpetuates the hard starting issues.
Years ago i purchased a car with a similar problem. I turned out the previous owner installed a cut off switch to the starter circuit that did not have the proper amoerage. So when the starter was cool, the starter worked fine, but when hot the starter required more amps and the weak switch prevented full power going to the starter. You may want to see if one was installed.
