I'm returning my 72 sb back to it's original four speed configuration and looking for some help. Will any year(68 thru 81) four speed shifter work? Does the linkage all have the same design? While watching ebay I've seen adds stating "this is a rebuilt shifter", what parts need rebuilding? The clutch petal is still in the car, can someone please make me the complete list of parts that I'll need to accomplish this. I do have the M 20 unit. One more question, the AT driveshaft in the car now along with the slip yoke will need to be replaced as well, should I use new or search for used? TIA WB
If the 81 parts will work for you I have the complete shifter, I installed a hurst shifter. Not sure if itll work Borg warner to Muncie? Im sure others will chime in.

Thanks! Lets hope someone can tell me if it will work! WB
i just converted my 69 from hurst shifter back to it's original shifter. i bought complete rebiuld kit from "ZIPS". you also have to have the mounting bracket that bolts to the crossmember that the shifter bolts to. you will also need the muncie shift rods which are different from the borg warner.as far as the driveshaft and yoke go used are okay as long as you are sure that they are not damaged and then you might want to send them to a drive shaft shop to check them for balance. so unless you really want "original" i would opt for after market.

The shift mechanism on my 68 exhibited noticeable wear even though it only has about 67,000 miles on the odometer. It was easy to see why. Rebuilding and renewing my 68, it finally came time to remove the shifter. Is was surrounded with a big black thick coating of grease and sand. Sand had worked into the shift mechanism and worn groves on the main shaft that holds the shift levers. The holes in the shift levers, where the levers rotated around the main shaft, were undoubtedly worn also.
You can buy the parts to rebuild a shifter from Volunteer Vettes. They are not expensive. It's pretty easy to rebuild the shifter. After you clean up the original best as you can, make a good drawing or photos of the shift levers in place. This makes re-assembly easier if you've never done this. Also, Corvette Central sells the little shim that used to realign the levers when you remount it in the car. This transmission alignment shim is in their C2 catalog.
