Default plastic distributor delay

My '80 has a plastic (green and black) dist delay hooked up to the vacuum line off the distributor.I have run the car with and without it, and cannot tell any difference in performance. Does anyone know what it does? I suspect it has somethingto do with emissions during warm up, as it hooks up to the aircleaner.

I agree. Back in the day, that was the first emission gizmo removed when you got your new car home. It'll run better w/o it.
