Timing tab
I've been working on my friends 68' 427-400 h.p. convertible. I was going to set the timing when I noticed the tab that has the timing index marks on it has a smooth rather than saw-toothed edge on it (like my 72'-454). My question is do the index marks on the timing-tab reference one degree or two degree increments. The tab has no numbers on it just "A" (advance), "0" (zero advance or retard) and "R" (retard). Any help with this problem would certainly be appreciated.
Sounds like it has an aftermarket tab on it...and the numbers have faded or been erased over time. Buy another one or re-mark it with permanent marker [measured from tab on same diameter balancer]. The "0" on the tab should be your 0 degree mark.

You have the correct stock tab for a BB. Each mark is 2 degrees.
But rather than use a standard timing light and set the initial timing, just go out and buy an adjustable timing light at Sears for a lousy $69. That way, you can set up total timing, do the job right, and you never need to use anything but the "0" mark on the tab. Drop me an e-mail request for my timing paper if you need to know how to do this: V8FastCars@msn.com

Thank you for your response. Though this past Saturday's project was just to get the engine running and idling, we will be using an adjustable timing light when we begin to set the total timing. Once again, thanks for your information.
