Default Overheated..

I went to my mechanic today to have a timing adjustment on my new dist. Once the adjustment was made I took her 4 a test run n when I got back i realized I forgot to flip on the switch 4 the electric fanz.....The reason 4 this is my sensor is shot so I use the manual switch in the cockpit....Anyway the temps quickley shot up to 260 n the only thing we noticed was antifreeze from the over flow tank....When I drove her home all seemed ok except for a slight increase in water temps...Could I have damaged anything n what should I look for...Thanx...Jerrylee///

260? That's not too bad, really. If you had antifreeze mix then the coolant probably didn't boil so I'm guessing you're OK. It sounds like the radiator cap stayed on which means that the pressure was maintained.

Sounds like you should replace the sensor switch

At 260 deg., you would just be starting to "burn" organic oil. Synthetics would not be damaged until about 300 deg. If you're using regular oil and it was only for a few minutes, give the dipstick a check. If it doesn't smell or look burnt, change it in 2000-3000 miles. Otherwise, change the oil/filter to be sure your lubrication is in good shape.

Don't know when you last changed your oil?
Don't know history of the engine? ie. low/high mileage

My recommendation would be to warm up the engine (to suspend any particulates), then change oil and filter.

Next step would be to definitely take care of temp sensor.

Damage to the engine is unlikely, however I would personally drive the car with the radio turned off and my ears tuned in for a few miles.

Jerry, if its still running ok, you may be fine. If its running rough or blowing white smoke then I'd say you may have blown a head gasket or warped something which would then be a compression/leak down test.

Sounds like its time to get that temp switch to be replaced
