Far be it from me to question another man's use of Vaselline but...
There is assembly lube specific for transmissions.

I thought Vasaline would clog the valve body up. Can you get the assembly lube at most parts stores?

Vaseline works great. Been using it for 30+ years without a problem. As hot as the ATF gets, it disolves almost immediately, and it doesn't have any by-products to harm the seals. If it makes you nervous, just change the fluid after a short while.

I just finished installing a Trans-go shift lit and they recommend vaseline for holding the check ***** in place.

There is some pink stuff out there, but at $12.00 for a butter tub of it, vaseline works fine.

Vaseline
Go with the vaseline, put a B/M shift kit in around 1977 and it worked fine.

I've used regular bearing grease(not the type for disc brakes), and haven't had any problems

The transmission repair guys at Allison Transmission were given Vaseline in 10 lb. cans....used a bunch of it on auto seals, checkballs, etc.
