If you have the new bellhousing and bolts for the cover, It's not a bad job to change it. Way better than new motor time.

Hey Rich,
bellhousing.. that's the word that I was searching for...
Should the flywheel be immersed in oil ?
Just trying to find if I can drive this car to the shop.

The fly wheel is not supposed to be immersed in oil. You could drive this to the shop to get fixed but don't accerlerate hard or shift hard up or down. baby it.

No oil...but see if you can get any debris out of that hole,if any...the dust cover will chatter, but you should be able to drive it to a shop...
(My 78 dust cover once got bent slightly on a clutch install...made a racket !!!)

Do you think changing the bell housing is fairly easy?
I do most of the small jobs myself.

There is this local person selling used parts.
He has a few listed on his site. Can you help me determine what would be the best for my small block 4-speed ?
http://www.corvettejunk.com/68to82.htm#Transmission

Also what is the deal with the numbers (Bell housing #3840383) and clutch sizes?

Get a shop manual for your vette...
Pull transmission, old clutch and bellhousing before buying parts...(chances are you have a 10 1/2" clutch)...you should resurface your flywheel and install new pilot bushing or pilot roller bearing...when you buy new clutch kit, be sure to get a clutch alignment tool...

Look at the oil pan there guys, that looks like a fresh hit.
It also looks like when that happened whatever hit it all so took out the bell housing because that also looks broke and probably hit the flywheel and bent that to making it hit something inside.
I wouldn't doubt that the crank is bent to.
Sorry to make this scary for ya but it don't look good..
From your pics the angles from your oil pan and your bell housing they should be strait up and down with a even gap not angled like that

How long have you had the car? If for over a year, how long has it been bottoming out when you go over a good-sized bump? You're very luck you haven't torn up the teeth on the flywheel...or maybe that's why its starting to clatter. Get that "puppy" to a repair shop...and it might be good to get some new shocks, too.

Hi guys,
I have had this car only for the last couple of months.
Looks like the previous Bubba ran over something that dented the oil pan and cracked the bell housing.

I got the problem inspected professionally yesterday.
The clattering was caused by a bent inspection cover rubbing against the flywheel.

Miraculously nothing seems to be wrong with the flywheel or anything inside.

I am not going to replace the bellhousing now. The mechanic thinks that the crack may not cause any problems now.

Is this a good idea?

You definitely need to seal off the open area at the bottom of the housing. If a rock flips up there and gets in the flywheel teeth....well, you get the idea. Even if you just pop-rivet some aluminum sheet to the inspection cover...whatever. Just get it sealed off before you drive it, or risk tearing stuff up.
