Default Windshield Wiper Cover Question

To the owners of 68-72 vettes. How much truoble was/is the windshield wiper cover on these cars. I have read that they are troublesome and that sometimes the cover wont open when you need to use your windshield wipers or open when you dont need them.

Default wipers

years ago i had a 68 in 72 and a 71 from 72 till 80 i never had any problems with either one , and were great with hideaway wipers i drove them both to vermont in winter, i am redoing a 72 now and that was one of the things i aquired the wiper door and hindge assemblies, a little pricey now but worth it great looks anyone can bolt on a long hood they are actually cheaper than the short ones because the fit from 73 to 82

Hey, first time poster here, some of you veterans feel free to chime in on this popular problematic subject if I get some of this wrong!

Some windshield wiper doors are nothing but problems, and others work flawlessly. Are you aware of the 2 override valves located beneath the steering column? These valves were meant to operate both systems primarily when the engine is NOT running, that is why there is also a vacuum reserve tank. Anyway, one valve opens the headlight doors, and the other opens the wiper door. It's hard to pinpoint one particular problem with the wiper door system should it fail, because many things can cause the same symptom. If your wiper door does not function properly, it could be anything from the vacuum solenoid on the back of the tach, the acuator valve, the actuator itself, wiper door relay, misalignment of the wiper door to activate the relay, or even a GROUND problem from the switch.

I got sick and tired of troubleshooting the entire system on my 71, so I took the easy way out (albeit not the cheapest), I removed the entire wiper door system and replaced the standard hood with a L-88 hood that covers the wiper compartment. Of course you have to bypass some vacuum lines, but no more headaches. Check out this link http://www.vettevacuum.com/ and contact Chris, he has a troubleshooting guide available. Good luck!

lots of views here.... I have a 68 and mine work fine, I had to replace the actuator which was 38 years old, but aside from that it works fine.

the problem exist here in my opinion come from
1. leaking vacuum lines
2. low vacuum due to mods
3. misdiagnosis of problems

and thats just for the vaccum system, there are also the associated electrical problem which stem from

1. burned motor
2. bad switches or solenoid
3. bad wiring
