I have a 78 and right now my white wires are cut & spliced, bypassing the timer (lil orange box). Everything works, but the courtesy lights won't go off by themselves. I intend to replace the timer someday, but for now it's no big deal.

If they wont go off by themselves, I mean by closing the doors , you have a bad door switch, or the light switch over ride is turned on.
You should be able to unplg the delay and plug the wires into themselves without cutting them if I remember right and the courtesy lamps still work with the door, just no delay. I can't remember the exact way, just experiment which 2 go together for them to still work
