A prior owner installed my exhaust tips backwards (holes are inboard). I would fix it myself, but the hangers are welded (bubba'ized) and I want to get a local shop to line things back up!
At the same time, I am considering installing new mufflers. I want a nice rumble at idle, with a thunderous WOT!! :D But not too lound cruising that I get asked to move out of my neighborhood!!
I have already lived through the rattle the window and wanting to set off car alarms at 50 feet stage of my life (sorta!!), but I do want everyone to know that a Big Block is cruising by!! :yesnod:
Re: Big Block Muffler Recommendations - '72 w/ LS5 (QikStik)
I don't have any positive recommendations, but I can tell you a few things I have noticed with other friends cars. First off, there is a big difference between the pre-catalytic true duals era and the post-cat y-pipe era. On the pre-cat cars that I personally have heard and ridden it, the Flowmaster 50 series sound good, not too loud, but they have a resonance at about 1500-2000 rpm that can be a little annoying. That's mostly due to having no tailpipe to further muffle the sound when it exits the muffler. I've heard 40 series Flowmasters on a 57 chevy hotrod and they weren't nearly as loud as the 50's on a Vette.
Some folks here like the Ravin mufflers. I know a guy who has them on a ZZ4 equipped '81 and they sounds real nice. Sound is such a personal preference that you may have to hit Bucko's and listen to some other cars to see what you like.
Personally, the repro Corvette Central 2.5" system I just installed sounds just the way I like it. It has a throaty rumble at idle but is quiet enough at cruise to be unintrusive.

I have Allen's chambered exhaust on my '71. Certainly meets the "nice rumble at idle, with a thunderous WOT" criteria. Some folks think they're too loud, but I love the sound. There seems to be a wide variation among folks as to what's loud and what's not - you're probably going to have to go to some cruise nights/car shows to hear various systems to choose your own.
Re: Big Block Muffler Recommendations - '72 w/ LS5 (QikStik)
I have some Bullit stainless mufflers you could try if you'd like. I had them on my '71 454 but they were too loud for me. They were quieter than flowmaster 50 w/ deltaflow, with much less drone. About the same as dynomax, but with a better sound. If you're interested I can ship them to you to try and if you don't like them, send 'em back and you'd be out shipping (both ways).
Re: Big Block Muffler Recommendations - '72 w/ LS5 (QikStik)
I've got the Delta 50's on my 73, I think they are great. As far as resonance goes I really didn't have any until the headers, and then it was only at about 1500 rpm which is below what I normally cruise and drive at so it's of no bother to me, I love the sound of them on the highway and at WOT. Not super loud but enough that you get noticed and deffintly gets that big block sound to it. With a set of headers they sound really nice :D
