Guys
seems like the q-jet on my 74 has issues.....is the 76, 77, q-jet the one where they added the anti-disel switch and had the big blank **** for the choke adjustment?
I'm buying one of those late 70's Q-jets with the black choke adjusting dial (non-electric) on the side. It will be rebuilt with the proper jets and rods for my '70.

1967 thru 1974 passenger car Q-Jets are divorced choke carbs. They use a choke coil mounted to the intake manifold. 1975+ passenger car Q-Jets are integral choke carbs and use a choke housing for hot air or electric choke systems. Any carb, including late 60s, can have the idle-up solenoid, so the solenoid is not an indication of year.
Lars
thanks - in your opinion am I better off going with a 75+ carb??
JIM
I'm not Lars, but from what I gather, rods and jets are not manufactured for the 75+, so 74 and older are easier to dial in. Any carb can have issues, though. What issues does your 74 carb have?
I rebuilt my 74 carb and am happy with it.
it seems to be choking out....choke is closed all the way and when I Adjust it back it floods....when I did have it running a bit, a little tap on the gas would stall it out

Thanks I will have a look
there are really only two adjustments on this thing...two jets, I turned all the way in then out 2.5 turns..on the choke screw, I played with it in and out ...does not seem to make a difference
Thanks I will have a look

OK, you're talking about the idle mixture screws. You should check your choke pulloff and see if it's functioning.
Thanks
the carb is a new/rebuilt from Orelly....
when its cold should the choke plate be all the way closed or should there be about a 1/4 inch opening
besides the idle mixture screws, the only other adjustment is the other screw below the choke pull off....except of course the main idle screw

All parts for the 1975+ carbs are available except primary metering rods. Only the truck rods are available for the primary side, and these are not suitable for performance tuning. But since the 75+ carbs have an easily adjustable power piston (APT), they can be set up and tuned fairly well.

It doesn't matter. It just depends on the type of choke you want to run. 1975+ has an integral choke.

Oh, gawd.... there's your problem. That carb is seriously screwed up. It will have a cut power piston and plugged idle air bleeds. It needs a complete teardown and correct setup with correct parts.
Lars
you say "Oh, gawd.... there's your problem. That carb is seriously screwed up"
can you recommmend a place to get a carb ?
Should I go back to Orelly and throw the carb through their window?
Thanks

If it is a good carb, I think that Lars or Ole can rebuild it correctly if they can get the parts.
Any mods to the carb itself minus rod changes. I have bought a few till I got one that was not molested. An example would be where someone didn't know how to adjust the choke, or choke pull off so they drilled two big holes in the butterfly plate! Really you just have to look at the carb and see that it is whole.
Lars recommended to me that I should look for a '77 carb from a G.M pass car. I did he took it home with him and I couldn't be happier!
Thanks Lars and ....Where is my sticker???
