big block progress

these were pictures on Friday night.
we got the heads on, intake manifold, carburator, distributer, new battery, (adjusting rockers=pain in the ***)
All that is left right now is to make all the connections, put on the valve covers, tune the carb and fire it up!!
progress is good, and I hope to get it running properly in time for the meet!!
I'll try to get some pictures when we're all done today.
2 full days of work. Exhausted still, but unlike Kyles $20 hooker, I went to sleep sore and satisfied.
Day 1
Corey (thanks a MILLION for ALL of your help! couldn't have done it with out you) pulled off the other head, cleaned up the head and the block so we would have a nice smooth spot to work with. We got the heads on, had some trouble torqueing down the head bolts, because there are some pretty tight spaces that are hard to get to with a big-ole torque wrench. I got a GREAT LESSON in mechanics this weekend. Paul showed me how to lube up (yeah yeah, make your jokes) the lifters, rockers, etc. We got the intake manifold on, carburator. Wade and Corey put on the headers (hehehe, good luck with those!) while Paul and I went to Advanced Auto to talk to a couple "newbs" to get headER gaskets, collector gaskets, oil sending unit. And then to Walmart to get a battery. We got the headers installed, and put the Disty on and then went to supper, and pretty much called it a day.
Day 1 night
My buddy drunk dials me at 3:00am... me=not having fun with 3:00am drunk dial...
Day 2
I get there about 12:30, Corey and Jerry are already hard at work trying to get the plugs installed... Apparently the headers still suck and make some close quarters to work. But we got the plugs in, got the wires on, put the Valve covers on, got all the vaccuum fittings in place, and try to turn it over...
No spark.
We check all the power sources.
We're getting juice to the disty, but no spark.
So we tear the disty apart and i'm getting a little concerned. The words "new distributer" is flying around. We go to Jerry's and borrow some parts off of his '78 to check what's wrong. After swapping parts and this and that, we deduct that it's the HEI module that is shot. COOL!!! no worries. $15 and some timeing later, WE'RE FIRED AND GOOD TO GO!!! Then we did a little brake work, so I'm pretty confident that they'll work. And they let me take it around the block...
Holy crap.
This car scares me! It's definatly going to take some getting used to. There is a LOT of hood in front of me. And a LOT of HP too! I got it on some black top, and there was NO hesitation to light 'em up!! Which REALLY impressed me, because before we did all this, it was seeming that the engine was getting pretty tired, and it didn't want to break traction very well. But now I'm VERY happy. We still have some gremlins to work out. After we run it for a little bit and let it sit for a little bit, it seems that the carb kinda burned the fuel off and we're sitting with vapor lock or something. We get positive pressure from the fuel pump, but it doesn't go into the carb, very strange.
But it VERY cool that 2 year old gas is still potent! What we're going to do next is get a trans filter and gasket, drop the pan, put in some new fluid. Apparently there is WAY too much in there. But I can't wait to be able to drive it again. I'm still a little edgy about getting it on the road. I dont know if there is anything else that has dried up or what not. I really hope that everything gets figured out by the big April meet!
Suprisingly, we DID have a canadian there!! (we almost had an Australian too. But he had a wedding to go to and did want to get all greased up) And I was the one who brought the Lebats for him, so he didn't feel out of place. However, he did give us a long talk about the pros and cons of preservatives in beer...
While we were working.
thanks Canada!!
I'm just hoping I'll get everything running properly intime for the big multi "club" meet in a couple weeks.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I get it on the road, and it doesn't want to shift well...
Plus I'm seeing some white puffs behind me. At first I just pass it off as the remnance of MN Salt on the road...
We go a little farther, and it starts getting worse. So I pull over, and see that the transmission is leaking onto my exhaust (could've been a LOT worse) So i take it back to my buddy's place. He finds a couple problems. The hoses on the radiator weren't fitting well, so he did a quick fix of those on Sunday, and corrected a vaccuum line.
Monday I ride up with another friend, Andy (whose blue ZO6 was featured in Vette magazine) and we pick it up. It shifts beautifully, drives great. And drove it home.
Then we get 2 inches of snow...
WHAT THE HELL!!!
Oh well, it should be pretty nice next week. I'll give it a good bath to get the 2 years of dust off of her. Make sure to get some good miles on it. Cruise around as much as I can!
(this car HATES cold weather. what a pita to start!)
