Default having trouble with my carb

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I went to start my 64 with a quadrajet carb and it fired up and then sputtered out. After trying for awhile, the battery went low so I put a charge on it. This morning I tried starting it again and it did the same thing. I took the air cleaner off to see what was going on and there was gas everywhere. When I turned the key, I could see the gas coming out of the top of the carb.
At that point I gave up. I don't want to torch the car. Does anyone know what could be going on? I have been having trouble lately with restarting the car after it has been run for a period of time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

the float could be getting "gasoline logged"
the needle and seat could be going bad
some trash could be in the needle and seat

your going to have to take it apart to see-might as well get a gasket kit

Also replace the float...regardless of how it looks. You may have to order it separately (if not included in the rebuild kit).
