On my 79 L82 with cruise, the tranny speedo cable runs up to a small unit located on the driver's side fender. You'll also see several wires and vac hoses also connecting to this unit. From the unit another speedo cable goes to the dash. You can get a reman cruise unit from Zip or MAD for about $100. However before replacing the unit, unhook both cables and see if they are not frozen up inside.

Remove the "to speedo" cable from the cruise unit and see if it turns freely. If it does...but the speedometer shows no action at all...your speedometer is likely defective. If your speedo shows some movement, the cruise unit gearing is likely stripped. But open up the cruise unit and verify that before you buy another one. Or, if that is all that's wrong with the speedo head, buy a junk one and swap the gears.
