I know this has been posted on before and I searched through some threads. I want some simple answers. This leather / vinyl seat dye, does it work, and is it paint or dye? Becuase to me it seems paint woule just flake off of a seat with the constant bending. I was goin to get new seats but if I can just dye them then I can get the two tone color I want and it would open up a lot more for the rest of the lay out. Thanks for any answers. O yeah and has any one ever used this and chaged the color of the seat???
Have dyed seat belts and played around with vinyl dyes.
Heres the deal, seat belts yes.......they can be but you can have some issues with recoiling dependant on the dye you use. Its a permeating dye so it will add volume so to speak and will stiffen things up.
The seats, dont mess with them, shop until you drop on an upholstery guy that'll do it well and cheap. I got my 78 seats refoamed and recovered with excellent "pleather" for 750.00 canadian funds. Other quotes were double and triple. Turns out this guy was about an hour out of town and all he does is hotrods and high end marine. Hes a pro with a gagage for a shop.
Vinyl dye works great on all vinyl. It may work on leather, but I've not tried it. I'd like to know the answer to that, too. [thinking about getting a leather wrapped steering wheel and dyeing it the color of my interior]
sorry I can't help ya out and to get off your subject, but could you post a picture of your car and/or email me a few?....i've been thinking about a charcoal color like yours and just wanted to see some better pics.....i 'd greatly apppreciate it man!
Vinyl paint also works on leather. All you are doing is dying a porous surface with color. You can spray paint cartpets (which has excellent results), you can recolor leather. Let me prove it to you, have you never "re-colored/dyed" shoes ?
Having said that, get leather dye.....and yes spray paint of any kind will even color leather, but, I dont advise doing so.
On my 79 I recently refinished a navy blue lower cushion with this...changed it to black (not red). Came out beautifully. From what I've learned it has a lot to do with the prep. Clean real good with a mild detergent and water rinse. Finish with 70% Isopropyl alcohol or some kind of solvent to remove any surface residues. Spray outside when temps are over 70 F to make sure it penetrates well and dries quick.
Haven't used the cushion for any length of time yet but it came out fantastic..for about $5. I'll see how long it lasts but I'm set for the shortrun. Worth the try...
All right thanks for the advise. Im goin to give it a try. im goin to two tone the seats black/charcole, and also the door panels. I figure if it doesnt turn out I can always get new stuff. thanks again
bluegtp these are all the pics I can find right now let me know how you want me to take some pics and i would be more than happy to do it.
