Hey Norval, what are the top five machine shop tools or pieces of equipment I would want if outfitting a shop of mine for general machine and metal work?

Don't include MIG or hand tools.

You need a mill. It is about the most expensive but you can do so much with it even if you only use it as a precision drill press.
A lathe. Lots of turning jobs.
A good drill press. Sure you have the mill but alot of times you don't want to bother with the setup of the mill.
You already said a mig it out. You do need a good 220V unit, not the 110. I have both mig and tig.
A good cutoff saw. You will not get by with just a chop saw. The cut off saw can double as a band saw and you need a good saw.
I also have a disc grinder, not the cheap light weight ones but a real heavy duty unit, about 14 or 16 inch wheel and it really works for shaping pieces and deburring.
Bench grinders, I have 3 with different stones, a wire brush.
A large heavy heavy welding table, I have 1/2 inch plate so it never warps and I can clamp to it.
I big air compressor, I also have 9 hand help grinders, I know overkill but I like different blades, cutters, wire wheels, sanding discs etc so I have a large selection.
This will eat up most of your spare cash.
Good luck

A friend of mine just sold 3 Bridgeports, variable speed, Anilam readers, 48" tables, basic vise and collets for $1500.00 apiece. Great deals, but in order to use them you are looking at thousands in additional tooling. Not cheap.
