well lets see..maaco,tech school, earl shweib,do it myself,so many decisions..i think ive decided on earl shweib if u can believe this...heres why (1) the price is right $259.95 plus $110 for the door jams.. (2) they are offering a 6 year no peel no chip warrenty (3) they are spraying on 1 primer and 3 coats...
so for $400 i get a 6 year warrenty ,a my choice of colour, and 4 coats..how can i lose,if they leave runs i leave without paying its that simple ..i have done all the prep work myself so i think this should turn out allright..they use a acrylic urethane euro-paint which is made just for earl schwieb which means its probably crap but with the warrenty the math seems right..this is a 50% off sale..has anybody had this paint put on any vehicle and with what kind of results?
Re: final paint decision..earl scheib...i think:) (1980 razz)
I had earl sheib paint my race car, and it looks pretty good from 30 feet away.
They basically do a $259 job.
I think I got what I paid for. they didn''t cover the whole car, they only sprayed down, so they didn't fill the channel on the door bottoms.
tons of overspay everywhere.
I would never bring them my vette.
NEVER!!
Re: final paint decision..earl scheib...i think:) (1980 razz)
I think this is probably a classic example of "you pay for what you get" I'd never take my Vette there. I paid $2500 for my paint job and know I got a great deal on it for all of the work that they did (stripped down to the glass, repaired stress cracks and painted in a custom color). HTH
Re: final paint decision..earl scheib...i think:) (1980 razz)
See if they will let you bring in your own paint. I won't hurt to ask. Sure, you'll spend more for the paint than they will charge for the whole job, but what should that tell you? Make sure they are diligent in how they mask off the car too.
What you've got to lose, basically, is that they are only offering "no peel no chip" warranty. Is the warranty some kind of pro-rated thing that will only pay a sliding scale portion of the paint job cost? Will they prep the car again for you to the extent that you have done so? I doubt it. If the paint starts to oxidize in a year, you're out of luck. You'll be left with an oxidized surface that you won't be able to paint on top of. Then you'll get to strip and prep the car all over again.
Buy a good quality paint and have them spray it. Make sure they mask it off properly. Screw their warranty. Just look at it like you're paying their painter an hourly wage to spray the paint for you.
Re: final paint decision..earl scheib...i think:) (1980 razz)
I took my son's first car a Baretta GT to Macco for a repaint and change of color, and they did a real nice job, car looked totally new. I would never take my Corvette to any of those painters though. Take the time and do all the chrome removal and stripping and preping yourself then go to some body shops for estimates. I always equated Earl Shribe as a car wash with paint:
"I'll paint any car for $59.95 (they pull it through slow) and the delux paint for $69.95 (they pull it through slower)"
Just my opinion of course I could be wrong,

Been there done that!
I once went the route of econo paint jobs and the old saying is true! "You get what you pay for!" Maaco > Earl Schieb, I had a earl paint job on a old truck and they did a decent paint job, the problem was the paint. The paint is not quality grade paint, it is ok grade paint. They shoot it light and it just does not hold up as well over time.
Why go the headache of prepping/bodywork and making it look nice if your going to slap a elcheapo paint job on there? That sort of defeats the purpose I think. *shrug* There are plenty of local shops in most places that will shoot it for around $500.00 and it will look better than the econo special.
I dunno, I just hate to see esomeone cut corners due to budget just to finish a project. It always comes back to bite you later.
Re: final paint decision..earl scheib...i think:) (1980 razz)
1980 razz,
Don't do it unless you plan to sell the car in the next few years. You can probably find a painter a Earl Scheib that can put down a good looking coat of paint, but they use the cheapest of everything (paint, primer, sandpaper, etc.)...it will NOT last. Been there....done that. You will find yourself doing this all over again in 6 or 7 years, except you will have the added pleasure of stripping off what's left of their paint job.
If you decide to supply the paint , you need to supply ALL the paint; primers and top coat(s). Stick with the major brands like: Dupont, PPG, Sikkens, etc. and stay with their system, don't mix and match brands. Also, don't use their cheapest stuff either, it's probably the same crap that Scheib uses. Use a 2-part epoxy primer, do not use lacquer primer. Topcoating with basecoat/clearcoat is highly recommended, especially if you are going with a metallic. If the car's a solid color a single stage urethane is OK. Also remember, the darker the color the easier it will be to see flaws in prep work and painting.
Good quality paints are not cheap, they could easily cost as much Scheib charges for an entire job, but they're worth it. Besides, you won't have to keep going back to have warranty work done on the paint.
