Default Choke for a Q-Jet?

I need a choke for my Q-Jet in the 1972. It currently doesn't have one, but does have the vacuum port for hot air choke. Does anyone know where I can find a hot air choke -or- is there an aftermarket electric choke that can be installed on a Q-Jet?

Any AC Delco outlet will have the housing and innards. Or there are 1000s of Chevrolets in junk yards.

If you would rather not hunt through junkyards, Edelbrock sells both hot air and electric choke kits for Q-jets. I converted mine to electric so I could block the heat crossover for now and maybe add Vortec heads later.

So the Edlebrock fits correctly on a Rochester Q-Jet with no problems? I saw their electric choke in Summit catalog, but wasn't sure if it would fit.

I have been unable to confirm for sure if any Quad can be converted to electric choke. Some say yes and some say it depends on the carb itself. I know this doesn't help but I have been asking the same thing myself. I have a quad that does have an electric choke on it that is from an early 80's truck I believe. It has provisions for the electric choke to screw into the side of the carb body. The casting of this carb may be different than those originally designed for the "divorced or hot air chokes".

I will defer to Lars and others more knowledgeable than I.

This is a new hot-air choke with housing and the various pipes. The parts are still available from GM but are pricey. I wished to retain the stock look so I went in that direction.

If you want the original look for an electric, the very last Q-jets before EFI (like 85 or 86?) had a full electric setup. C-10 pickups with 5.0 and 5.7's had 'em.

If you have the correct carb or one that is a direct fit, you only need the choke thermostat coil. It goes in the pocket near the left side of the carb at the base and a rod opens and closes the choke valve.

Kind of hard to see in this pic but you can see the electric choke and the block off plate on the manifold if you look closely. Compare to Paul's photo above.

I had exactly the same setup as Paul. The Edelbrock kit consists of the black cover with coil and the wiring. All you have to do is replace the hot air cover/coil with the electric. As electricity is applied, the coil heats up and opens the choke up. You need to use a 12v source that is turned on and off with the ignition.

Hope this helps. BTw, Edelbrock sells this as a conversion for those carbs with the hot air setup. If you have the setup with the coil on the manifold, it will not work.

thejaf, if you have the original 72 q-jet it does not have the necessary provisions to mount the choke housing on the side of the carb body. Those were not on q-jets until 74. Pre 74 can only use the spring and linkage mounted on the manifold. To mount an electric choke, you will have to use a 74 or newer carb. Then you can mount the Eldebrock or the one from a newer q-jet. Sorry for the bad news. I have the older carb also and I also have a housing and have tried several times to mount it but couldn't. Just today I picked up a newer carb with electric choke, so after I rebuild it I'll be able to have a better choke. Hershey :smash:

:( The carb is originally from a 1969 350/350 Corvette. I have an Edlebrock Performer intake, so.....I guess I'm stuck with the no choke startup ritual.

Nope, found the info. Edelbrock PN 1931 for divorced choke on Q-jet. $21.99 from Jegs (www.jegs.com or 1-800-345-4545)

Little coil and rod that bolts to that little stove that you can see on my manifold (same place where hot air tubes go in on Paul's). Good picture in my Edelbrock catalog but can't find one online.

BTW: If you need that little stove piece to block the hole in the manifold, Edelbrock PN 8901. (Kept looking in the catalog)

THanks Steve, I'll look into that option. Checking Jegs now...... :smash:
