Default Weird electrical problem?

Why would my voltmeter on the gauge cluster read normal (12-14) while the engine is running, then when I turn the head lights on go to zero? The alternator is new, the lights don't dim when turned on. Am I missing something obvious? Electrical issues are not my strong suit. Any help would be appreciated!

Mine does the same I found where my alternator plugs the wire was almost broken in two fixed that it got a lot better. Does it stay low or does it come up after a while?

So far my connections 'look' intact. I'll keep checking.
