The wires you've marked "A" and "B" both go to the big stud sticking out on the new starter. The wire marked "C" is the start wire. Looks like i goes to the covered terminal on the new starter. and I'd look real close at the insulaton on the "A" wires. Looks burned in the pic. Maybe needs some TLC before completing the install..

Thanks.
The insulation is a little burnt, one of the previous owners wrapped the tape around the wires....
A and B both go on the stud just like they did on the old starter... that's what I thought.... looks like I need a different plug to fit C on the covered terminal.
Just the two. One big stud and the plastic covered terminal next to it. The wire that I labelled "D" on the first pic seems to be the blue wire on the second pic.....
These starters are usually labeled B for battery, R for run and S for start. The S wire is to supply a full 12 volts to the coil on cars equipped with points, wouldn't be needed for on HEI cars.
Like what was already posted, the C wire is the start lead, you can verify this by connecting the A and B wires to the large stud and using a volt meter have someone turn the key to the start position to verify 12 volts appear only in the start position.

makes sense, will borrow a multimeter tomorrow.
mental note: connect the neutral safety switch on the trans first ...
